How to Pray Fajr

First: the 2 sunnah rakats

Before the fard comes the pair of sunnah muakkadah — and for Fajr specifically, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The two rakats of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it.”

They are prayed exactly like a short 2-rakat prayer: intention, takbir, al-Fatiha plus a short surah in each rakat, ruku, two sujuds, tashahhud, salam. The Prophet ﷺ often recited al-Kafirun in the first and al-Ikhlas in the second (Sahih Muslim 726) — a beginner-friendly pair worth memorising early.

Two practical notes. They are best prayed at home, before heading to the masjid. And if you genuinely run out of time, pray the fard first — the sunnah can be made up after sunrise.

The 2 fard rakats, step by step

Rakat 1

1. Stand facing the qibla. Intention in your heart: two rakats of Fajr fard. Raise your hands and say Allahu Akbar.
2. Opening praise (thana), then al-Fatiha, then another surah or passage — see the full recitations here.
3. Allahu Akbar → ruku (back flat, hands on knees) → Subhana Rabbiya l-'Azim ×3.
4. Rise: Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah, then Rabbana wa laka l-hamd.
5. Allahu Akbar → sujud (forehead, nose, palms, knees, toes down) → Subhana Rabbiya l-A'la ×3.
6. Sit briefly — Rabbighfir li — then sujud again, same tasbih ×3.

Rakat 2

7. Stand. Al-Fatiha + a surah again (a little shorter than your first passage is the sunnah).
8. Ruku, i'tidal, two sujuds — same as rakat one.
9. After the second sujud, stay seated for the tashahhud:

Close with the salam — head right: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, then left, repeating. Fajr is complete.

Fajr is recited aloud — and long

Fajr is one of the loud prayers (jahri): al-Fatiha and the following passage are recited audibly, not whispered. In congregation the imam's voice carries it; alone at home, an audible murmur is the target.

The sunnah is also to make Fajr's recitation the longest of the five prayers. The Prophet ﷺ would recite between 60 and 100 verses in it (Sahih al-Bukhari 770). If you only know the short surahs for now, that is fine — recite what you know with presence rather than racing through what you don't.

Madhab footnote: in the Hanafi school a person praying alone recites Fajr quietly, and the loudness applies in congregation. Follow your local imam's teaching — the prayer is valid either way.

If you overslept and missed Fajr

Wake up, the sun is already up. Here is the entire rule: pray it now. The same 2 fard rakats, exactly as you would have prayed on time. No penalty ritual, no waiting for tomorrow, no doubled prayer.

“Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it” (Sahih al-Bukhari 597). Oversleeping is forgetting with extra steps. Pray the fard, then the 2 sunnah if you wish — both orders are accepted.

The real fix is upstream: the sleep duas and an intention before bed. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever mentions Allah at bedtime is woken for the prayer. And if you're awake anyway — tahajjud time is the same window.

Three Fajr mistakes to avoid

• Rushing the rakats. Fajr's 4 rakats should not take 90 seconds. Every position gets its stillness — that stillness is the prayer. Khushoo is built here, at dawn, when nothing else competes.
• Skipping the 2 sunnah while time remains. If sunrise is 20 minutes away and the fard takes 5, the sunnah fits. Only skip when the fard itself is at risk.
• Starting before true dawn. The pale vertical glow that fades is not Fajr time. Trust a calculated timetable over eyeballing the sky.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Fajr take?

Ten to fifteen minutes for all 4 rakats, prayed properly. Less if rushed — but that defeats the point.

Can I pray Fajr 10 minutes before sunrise?

Yes — the window is open until the sun's edge appears. A late Fajr prayed in its time beats an early one prayed before it.

What if I prayed but later realised the time hadn't started?

Repeat the prayer within the correct window. If the window has passed, pray it as qada.

Is Fajr silent or loud?

Loud (jahri) — al-Fatiha and the surah are recited audibly. Alone in the Hanafi school, a quiet voice is used; in congregation, the imam recites aloud.
