What is the Hijri calendar?
The Hijri calendar is the lunar calendar Muslims use for religious life. Its 12 months follow the cycles of the moon, so the year runs about 354 or 355 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. That is why Islamic months such as Ramadan appear to drift slowly through the seasons over the years.
Because it is tied to the moon, the Hijri calendar sets the timing of the most important days in a Muslim's year: the fast of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the nights of the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the rites of Hajj. Knowing today's Hijri date keeps those sacred days close — and a few minutes of daily reflection is all it takes to make the most of them.
The practice of muhasaba — the nightly self-accounting that gives Muhasaba its name — pairs naturally with a calendar rooted in worship. Explore the guides on the learn hub to go deeper.
