What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligatory act of worship given through your wealth. When your savings pass the nisab and have been held for one lunar year (hawl), you give 2.5% of the net zakatable amount to those in need. It is not a tax and not charity alone; it is a right that wealth owes, and a means of purifying what remains.

Allah says in the Quran: “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:103). The Arabic word zakat shares a root with zaka — to grow and be pure. Giving it is a quiet act of tazkiyah: it cleans the heart of attachment and the wealth of what does not belong to it.

This calculator uses the widely followed silver nisab (595g) by default, with an 85g gold option — both valued at live prices you can verify and adjust. Whatever the number, the spirit is constant: check yourself, purify your wealth, and give with a soft heart. To go deeper, read the full guide to zakat and explore the learn hub.
