What are the 99 Names of Allah?
The 99 Names of Allah — Al-Asma ul-Husna (الأسماء الحسنى), “the most beautiful names” — are the names by which Allah describes Himself in the Quran and the Sunnah. Names such as Ar-Rahman (The Beneficent), Al-Wadud (The Loving), and As-Sabur (The Patient) each reveal a different facet of His perfection, so that knowing them is a way of coming to know the One who created you.
These names are not merely beautiful words to memorise. Each one invites a response: the one who learns that Allah is Ar-Razzaq (The Provider) learns to trust Him with provision; the one who knows He is Al-Ghafur (The Forgiving) learns that no sin is beyond His pardon. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has 99 names — whoever memorises them will enter Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736).
To know His names is to draw closer to Him — and that is the heart of the practice of muhasaba. If one of these names stirs you, sit with it tonight: reflect on it, call upon Allah by it, and let it shape one small action for tomorrow.
